Yet, when Los Atico opened its doors atop the Cali-Mexican food oasis this month, the Hispanic food scene in Bangkok was turned up a notch with the newbie’s extensive list of tequilas, tasty food, and alluring art.

Situated on the 3rd floor of Cali-Mex Bar & Grill that’s tucked away on Sukhumvit Soi 11, Los Atico is the sister restaurant of Hong Kong’s much-beloved underground bar and restaurant “Los Sotano” and offers creative cocktails and an extensive list of 50 premium Tequilas and Mezcals. And not only does it fuel the city with spirited Mexican firewater, the restaurant also serves toothsome and authentic Mexican fare curated by the Peruvian-native Chef Abel Ortiz A, a former apprentice at Central Restaurant, Peru (the world’s 4th best restaurant).

Having spent quite some time working as a chef in Mexico, the Peruvian chef has been coming up with his own version of the Mexican fare, whipping up Hispanic dishes with Peruvian and Asian twists – think tequila-infused lobster taco, Thai-inspired coconut ceviche and green curry with marinated Mexican-style fried fish – which later became the signature dish of Los Atico and Los Sotano. The whole venue is also embellished with graffiti and murals, depicting the story of the Day of the Dead. That being said, Los Atico will undoubtedly give you an immersive Mexican experience.

Table Side Guacamole (THB 520)

Second to chicken wings, there are no other appetizers that can be as satisfying as guacamole with nacho chips. Made fresh to order by your table-side, the avocado-enriched dip here will be made and seasoned to your taste. Like your guacamole lime-y, chunky or heavy on the tomatoes? Tell your wish to the attentive server and she or he will make the guac just as you like it. Their version also incorporates pomegranates for some bites and bright acidity. Served with chips, you can enjoy the dip and sip on mezcal before the main comes.

Street Tacos Lobster Drunk on Tequila (THB 190)

Making the perfect taco is all about picking the right meat to put on it. Taco-wise, heavily-seasoned protein will always give life to that soft yet tasteless tortilla. Marinated in tequila for taste and texture, the lobster placed atop the tortilla makes for the best taco thanks to its meaty and mellow flavours. The tequila-infused crayfish gives a hint of sweetness and delicate texture that you usually get from soaking food in a strong liquid before cooking. Served with chunky guac and dots of black garlic sauce, this taco alone is an explosion of flavours in one bite.

Barbacoa Beef Short Rib (THB 1,700)

Designed to be appealing to carnivores, the Barbacoa Beef Short Rib will treat your taste buds with its fork-tender texture and chocolate-y taste. The quality short rib is slow-cooked in the house-made chocolate-infused BBQ sauce before getting served with beautifully-sliced avocados to balance the intensity of the meat out with its mild creaminess.

Duck Carnitas (THB 900)

Braised in oil (which is mean for making any Mexican meat carnitas) until tender, the duck skin, as a result, gets that beautifully caramelized yet crispy texture which keeps the meat inside lusciously juicy. The simple herb salad on top also gives it the tangy brightness, which is a flawless contrast to the richness of the meat.
