Bangkok’s fashion crowd just had one of their long-held wishes come true. Earlier on Wednesday, the beloved American designer brand Marc Jacobs officially opened their first ever flagship store in Bangkok. Now on the first floor of Central World, the colourful neon-lit store is part ready-to-wear, part concept-space, and all fabulously New Yorker. Here’s why this long-awaited Marc Jacobs flagship store is one of the most exciting openings our city has seen this year.

There are several reasons why this is a particularly special opening. Not only is it the first for Marc Jacobs in Bangkok, but it’s also the brand’s first flagship store in all of South-East Asia. It’s been several years since Thailand saw the boutique for Marc Jacob’s earlier namesake brand, Marc by Marc Jacobs. Now, it’s the first time that Thailand has ever had a stand-alone store for the newer Marc Jacobs label.

On top of that, it’s also the first time a Marc Jacobs store is combined with the designer’s concept boutique, delightfully named ‘Bookmarc’. The ‘Bookmarc’ space is a vibrant neon-lit area of miscellaneous goodies from coffee-table books to foil totes. The collection of gorgeous hardbacks includes ‘Marc Illustrated’ – a unique monograph of over 50 collections created by Marc Jacobs the designer in the past 25 years, illustrated by none other than former Vogue editor Grace Coddington.

The store as a whole embraces the concept of Marc Jacob’s exciting Americanism, a melting pot of various styles and collaborations under one roof. After all, Marc Jacobs was never meant to be pinned down to one aesthetic. Here you’ll find his Romantic floral blouses on the same rail as pyjama sets from the New York Magazine collaboration.

Meanwhile, in the middle of the store, you’ll find Marc Jacob’s to-die-for collaboration with Peanuts. The retro Charlie Brown comic strip on “The Box Bag” is a guaranteed add-to-cart item, but we also loved the large Peanuts tote bags and the all-over comic strip sneakers.

The Marc Jacobs collaboration with New York Magazine brings yet a more sartorial joy to the store. The designer has built this latest collection with the magazine’s iconic logotype, integrating the brand and magazine’s name together on t-shirts and purses.

But what is truly spectacular about the new Marc Jacobs store is their emphasis on the designer’s beloved bags, bags, and more bags. The walls are lined with ‘The Box Bags’ ranging in colours from pastel pistachio to neon fuschia.

Hanging on one side are also the new Jelly Snapshots – camera-sized shoulder strap bags with colourful silicone coating and polka dot prints.

From comic strips to the iconic New York magazine, the Marc Jacobs flagship store is bursting with kitsch Americana, in both aesthetic and spirit. Bangkok welcomed the exciting new flagship with an appropriately US-themed launch party. With an old-school snacks kiosk parked outside the store and mini burgers being served round, guests were romping around the buzzing new flagship to the DJ’s music.
