Whether it’s the sun and the moon or the oceans and the mountains -- the beauty of this world shines through its many contradiction. It's these captivating juxtapositions that inspired Pierre Hardy, Hermès' jewellery creative director, into creating a collection that brings together the beauty of both worlds. Starting with the idea of how stone-cold metal gets transformed into jewels of great sentiment, Hardy tapped into the house's origin as a harness-maker and saddler, and, by taking advantage of the maison's long tradition of chain-making know-how, he used the anchor chain as a leitmotif to design a collection of sensual, jewelled adornments made to dance freely against the female body. His concept? To transform the traditional chain from a symbol of bondage to one that also says freedom. "[The chain] connects and interconnects opposites, it attaches and liberates," explains Hardy. "It evokes strength, but also fluidity and softness." Named Enchaînements Libres, Hardy's new fine jewellery collection for Hermès has a full range of accessories from necklaces to bracelets, earrings and rings. While every detail has been meticulously crafted to showcase the splendour of precious stones and impeccable skill of the stone-setter, it's the design that lies at the very core of each creation. “These pieces of jewellery are conceived as extensions of the body,” says Hardy. "They reveal gestures, enhance postures. They are objects with a lot of personality, light and radiance." Dedicating the collection as an ode to the fluid body movement, Hardy devoted a great deal of time in the search for the perfect point of fusion between the metal and the human body. He also carefully and extensively explored the fluidity of the precious gold and the flexibility of the chain, making sure that the resulting designs are not only aesthetically beautiful, but also in forms that articulate and flex gracefully along every move of the alluring female body.
