When you combine visionary breakthrough engineering with the crème of haute horology, you can only expect unprecedented results in design and technical mastery. Roger Dubuis has partnered with tyre legends Pirelli and motor-sport heavyweight Lamborghini to assemble some of the most inspired and extravagant timepieces ever seen in the world of racing.

With the release of the new Excalibur Aventador S, it seems this daring partnership has left everyone else mere blips in the rear-view mirror but it is the Excalibur Spider Pirelli Sottozero that has racing and watch aficionados frothing at the bit.

Unveiled at the Lamborghini Winter Accademia in Livigno, Italy, the Excalibur Spider Pirelli Sottozero propels high-end watchmaking up to speeds that will be very hard overtake. Inspired by the Winter Sottozero tyres, this ice cool machine has a gorgeous white and blue skeleton dial and flange with rhodium plated indexes filled with blue luminous SLN, 18K white gold hands with blue transfer and white luminous SLN tips.

It is also the first Double Flying Tourbillon in a skeletonised calibre with power reserve indication.  The signature blue Astral Skeleton and multi-coloured power reserve indicator is a sly nod to the racing-car cockpit and its fuel gauges whilst the self-winding mechanical calibre gives you 52 hours of power reserve. Overall there are 366 components all flawlessly engineered together to make up this calibre.

It seems that the watch itself is powered by an engine, so in the true spirit of racing, the strap features rubber inlays from certified Pirelli tyres. To further characterise the winter elements, dozens of titanium studs have been set into the strap to emulate the nails in its namesake, designed for better grip under icy conditions.

It can be very easy for watchmakers to form racing brand alliances for the sake of being associated with power and performance. The onus is, more often than not, for the car to bear the responsibility of creating that perception. However, Roger Dubuis has proven that the timepiece doesn’t always have to be in the passenger seat. A bold statement on uncompromising quality, design and innovation and  limited to only eight pieces for the ultimate watch connoisseurs, the Excalibur Spider Pirelli Sottozero has its foot firmly on the pedal.
